Lucchio, at 780 metres above sea level, is one of the higher villages of Bagni di Lucca. Stone houses cling to the side of the mountain, making you wonder how on earth they were built all those years ago.
There is a ruin of a fortress at the top of the village. The fortress successfully defended the town against invaders in the centuries of fighting in the area.
We didn’t make it to the very top….next time
Of course there are magnificent views from the village.
Not many people live in Lucchio now, but the village is well preserved and there are some lovely buildings and well kept gardens. We spent an hour or 2 wandering (slowly, these streets are steep ) It is said that the hens in Lucchio lays square eggs to prevent them from rolling down the hill.
Don’t overlook Lucchio in your travels in Bagni di Lucca. It is the last village on the way to Abetone.

Thanks for this Debra. I’ve not got my mind map up and running at the moment. Where is Lucchio in relation to Bagni?
It is on the way to Abetone, on the right side of the road if you are heading towards Abetone. You actually briefly leave the Lucca boundary, and drive into Pistoia area, before crossing the river back into Lucca province and then on to Lucchio via a narrow, winding road. If you drive on and look back, you will see Lucchio clinging almost vertically to the side of the mountain…it is stunning.
Hello Debra we know the village and we have been there several times! Do you know the story of Lucchio? The lady from the café told us in italian: A Lucchio le galline hanno il canestro al sedere per non fare rotolare le uova a valle!!
The chickens would certainly need secure baskets to lay their eggs in. Lucchio is very steep indeed.
How on earth could they build these beautiful villages on such steep places. It’s incredible, and very nice.
The people must have been very strong and tenacious. The buildings were made to last.
It is a magic place!

It was really windy the day we were there and the track is not the best, but I would like to go to the top one day too.

Fabulous journey. It was a cloudy the one day I was there, but I found it fascinating. Only spent about 30 minutes walking, but would have loved more.
