Bluebells

I came upon this abandoned garden where bluebells have taken over…lovely. They can take over my garden any time they like.

I agree with you, they are lovely. They must belong to the Italian bluebell variety, which is different from the Northern European one. This is why they grow so well in the wild.

  Exactly – the Italian wild bluebell is scientifically” Hyacinthoides Italica” while our British variety is “Hyacinthoides nonscripta” and has thicker flowers. They both flower roughly at the same time, however, in their respective countries.

Glorious! There’s something about ‘blue’ in the garden….always lovely. We don’t have many bluebells here in Brisbane, Australia…..but we do have heaps of blue agapanthas and they’re beautiful too!

Be careful what you wish for. Some species of bluebell go rampant and take over your garden completely, leaving you with slowly rotting leathery leaves covering everything for months. Those pictured look to belong to the aggressive variety!
