It can be a bit difficult for new visitors to Italy to understand the parking signs.
In many places in Bagni di Lucca (and other places) you will see this sign.
It means you can park for free, but only for 2 hours, between the hours of 8.00am to 8.00pm. Outside these hours parking for longer periods is OK.
The little dial on the bottom left of the sign indicates that you need to set your timer.
In your car you should have a timer. Set this at the time you park your car and remember to come back before the time expires.
Your hire car should have one. If not, I have found them for a couple of euros at Tabacchi and some newsagents.
If you forget to set your timer that is no excuse. If the police come you will be issued with a fine.
Great post. I have never used a timer when parking in Italy. Is this a new thing? My last visit was in 201l. so I’m well overdue to return.
No, it isn’t new. The system has been in place all the time we have been regular visitors to Bagni di Lucca, which is 12 years. I have seen these signs in many places.
I got a fine once in Bagni di Lucca – You’d think I would know better!
We got one several years ago because we forgot to change the timer. We just paid the fine because we could see no point challenging it. We are much more careful now, especially as I can see the police checking the cars from my window.
It is most important to have one of those. They are used not only in Bagni di Lucca, but in many other towns as well. The Tabacchi shop on the Main Street in La Villa has them either on the counter or in a box, just behind it. If you have to ask for one in Italian, it is called “disco orario “.
I have bought them from the little kiosk in Ponte a Serraglio, but that is closed now…good to know they are available in La Villa.
You can get them free if you are a member of ACI and in some other places too
Thank you for that info. I have ACI membership.
In our restaurant we have “disco orario” for our customers on request….
That is very kind of you Ilario. I don’t think all that many visitors are aware of what they need to do.
A very useful tip … and hopefully it will come in handy.
Very interesting about the timer. Every bit of information for us who venture to drive in Italy is very much appreciated. Thanks
the little timer is a good idea – I shall pack that tip in my carpetbag:)
Oh, useful information!
Great post 👌🏼
