Most of the villages in Bagni di Lucca have monuments to fallen soldiers from WWI and WWII.
Ponte a Serraglio is no exception.
I think the statue is very stylish. It looks a bit Art Deco to me. What do you think?

It is a beautiful monument and according to the marble plaque it was erected in 1923. Definitely Art Deco.
It is lovely, tucked away in the little piazzetta.
With all these artist around in BDL I would love some of them to make some more permanent public art pieces. Perth is full of them and they look great.

It is very beautiful. I think it achieves the aim of inspiring sombre contemplation in those who stand before it. I wonder what the little figure in the left hand represents.
I remember that during our stay there, several ceremonies were held at the monument, always with great respect and pride.
I have seen this too and am always moved by the attitude.
Has anyone noticed the old water feature by the side of villa fiori? At the side is a beautiful stone foot, all that is left of a once lovely statue.
I have seen the fountain, but not the foot. I will look for it when I get back in a just over a week.
I have a photo of that statue but wasn’t sure who it represented. It is a stunning memorial.
One cannot help thinking of all the young men that tragically answered the call to support the war and the “good fight”. I have distant relatives who left the USA and went back to Germany to support their government during that time.

I find it difficult to look at these monuments without extreme sadness for the horrible waste of life and suffering these wars caused.
